CHANGES TO THE YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAM

Many of you would know me as DG two years ago and I have now taken over as Chair for Rotary District 9685 Youth Exchange.

Our numbers of students have been declining in recent years and this will be accelerated by a policy change by the NSW Education Department who will not allow credit for post HSC Outbound Students. Without those credits, we cannot complete our exchanges with Districts around the world by hosting Inbound Students.

We must reorient our thinking to sponsoring Year 9 or 10 students who will complete their year overseas and return for Years 11 and 12. We have already hosted many students from overseas who return home to complete their schooling. The success of any exchange student largely relies upon their attitude and the acceptance of those around them.

In 2015, we will only be interviewing students to go overseas in 2016 who will be returning to school on their return to Australia. Please keep this in mind in considering applicants for the program.

The Rotary Youth Exchange Committee will be taking a lead role to encourage more Year 9 and10 students to apply. We are starting a digital advertising campaign, targeting only the appropriate age ranges and their parents in our District. We expect to get more applications coming through the District Committee than before.

We will inform these applicants of what is involved in Youth Exchange and screen them, before directing them to where the real work gets done: the Clubs. If we direct a student to your Club, it is because they and their parents understand and are interested in the program and they are local to your area. It is only our suggestion that you sponsor them, but the opportunity will be yours.

I look forward to working with the Clubs of District 9685 as we take on this challenge.

Yours in Rotary,

PDG JOHN DODD.
