RAWCS Project 17 of 2018-19,

Drought Relief Fund for Australian Farmers

Supported by Rotary in Australia, National Farmers’ Federation & Channel 9. $10m target has been reached

In Australia, farmers are the lifeblood of our country and they are in crisis. Record breaking heat and lack of rain means farmers are struggling to feed sheep and cattle, and keep crops alive.  Families on the land are suffering and they need our help.  Channel 9 and Rotary Australia have partnered with the National Farmers’ Federation, launching an appeal to big business and everyday Australians, so we can provide some emergency relief. 100% of donations goes to the farmers and is tax deductible via Rotary and RAWCS.

Meeting 17th October 2018

6.30pm for 7pm Dinner Meeting

Guest Speaker Dennis  van Someren - Kenthurst Rotary Club

SHINE FOR KIDS

We support children, young people and families with relatives in the criminal justice system

Valued SHINE volunteer, Dennis van Someren spoke to Richard Fidler on ABC Conversations in an hour-long interview about his personal story and why he volunteers for SHINE for Kids.

Dennis’ happy family life was destroyed in the 1960s, when he was just 12 years old. His popular and respected father, an accountant, was charged with corporate fraud, and eventually jailed.  The outcome for Dennis’ parents and siblings was dire.  The family lost not only their material wealth and status, but also many friends.

As a teenager, Dennis was forced to grow up quickly, and find a way to endure the schoolyard bullies and the instability that surrounded him.

After leading a successful working life, Dennis was looking to do volunteer work in his retirement. He happened across a perfect fit when he heard Kirsty Vallance’s interview on Conversations 10 years ago – Shine for Kids, which assists some of the 60,000 Australian children who have a parent in prison.

Since 2009, Dennis has been a Children’s Supported Transport Service Volunteer, accompanying children on visits to their incarcerated parents.

RCNT INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:

This Week's Humour

A minister was completing a temperance sermon. With great emphasis said, "If I had all the beer in
the world, I'd take it and pour it into the river." With even greater emphasis he said, "And if I had
all the wine in the world, I'd take it and pour it into the river." And then finally, shaking his fist in
the air, he said, "And if I had all the whiskey in the world, I'd take it and pour it into the river."
Sermon complete, he sat down. The praise leader stood very cautiously and announced with a smile,
nearly laughing, "For our closing song, let us sing Hymn #365, "Shall We Gather at the River.".
