President's Message

Apologies from Newsletter Editor, been on vacation last few weeks, and now in bed with the flu. Did not have time to get an update from President David.

Greetings from Editor,

I understand the Primary Citizens Awards on the 29th November was a great success (See report from Bruce Thompson below) and we should congratulate Bruce Thompson and Debbie Carroll for the great work in organizing the evening. Bruce forwarded the following quote from a school Newsletter -

"Congratulations to Mia and Baylin  who have been nominated to receive Citizenship awards sponsored by Rotary at a special dinner presentation with their parents and staff on Wednesday evening. These students have embodied our school expectations of Responsible learners; Respectful relationships and are very deserving of this award. I am looking forward to seeing their dedication and commitment to the Mannering Park community recognized in this way"

On the 6th December Jenny organised a joint Christmas party with Wyong Tuggerah Rotary club, it was a good turnout and I understand the restaurant ""äll about Taste"" lived up to its name with a magnificent selection of BBQ meats. Good time had by all.It was also a special night as we were able to present exchange student Arki with her Rotary jacket and wish her bon voyage on her 12 month trip to Denmark. Also attending the evening was Belgium exchange student Leopol “Leo” Villain currently being hosted by Wyong Rotary. Leo presented Arki with her first pin.

Important meetings on the 13th December starting with Board meeting at 5.30pm, followed by AGM at 7pm. Members please attend as AGM will be followed by member forum.

Report Bruce Thompson

Two hundred and fifty students, parents , teachers and Rotarians attended the 19th Rotary Primary Citizenship Awards at Halekulani Bowling Club on Wednesday 29th November. The night sponsored by Family Chips Pty Ltd (thanks to Gavin McLeod) was one of the most successful nights ever. Blue Haven Public School provided the entertainment with their award winning school choir while 34 students received a special award for citizenship.
This event is held in high esteem by all participating schools and this is demonstrated by their participation over many many years. Thanks to the Rotarians who came along and helped  (Annette - Photos, Jan - awards). Even Phil Martin and Michelle Martin  helped serve the deserts.
David Harris excelled this year with his speech with many saying it was one of the best speeches he has given at this event while President David spoke with great conviction about Rotary and what it is all about. Each year over 250 people hear about Rotary for the first time - a great opportunity not to be missed.
Special thanks to the expert event organizer Deb Carroll who once again buzzed around over the last four weeks texting, phoning and having fun with all the parents. Well done Deb. Also thankyou PP Annette for being our photographer on the night.
Next year is our 20th Anniversary. I wonder what we can do to make this event one of the most memorable on the calendar for 2018. Date 21st November 2018.

This Week's Humour

Florida Woman Stops Alligator Attack Using a Small Beretta Pistol

This is a story of self-control and marksmanship by a brave, cool-headed woman with a small pistol against a fierce predator. What's the smallest caliber that you would trust to protect yourself?

A Beretta Jetfire?

Here's her story in her own words:

"While out walking along the edge of a pond just outside my house in The Villages with my soon to be ex-husband discussing property settlement and other divorce issues, we were surprised by a huge 12-ft. alligator which suddenly emerged from the murky water and began charging us with its large jaws wide open.

She must have been protecting her nest because she was extremely aggressive.

If I had not had my little Beretta Jetfire .25 caliber pistol with me, I would not be here today!"

"Just one shot to my estranged husband's knee cap was all it took. The 'gator got him easily and I was able to escape by just walking away at a brisk pace.

It's one of the best pistols in my collection, plus the amount I saved in lawyer's fees was really incredible. His life insurance was a big bonus.
