President's Message

Hello everyone hope you are all well,

Normal meeting this week we are still trying to confirm a guest speaker. We will shortly send out an updated activities sheet.

For those that don’t know Col Stephens is very unwell in Hospital and has been there for some time now our thoughts, prayers and best wishes are with Col, Ruth and family.

Thank you to all those that were able to make the BBQ at Camp Toukley on Wednesday the 1st Feb a very enjoyable night with good company. Thanks to Martin and his staff for making the Hall available and the food supplied.

Again thankyou to all those who made the movie night at the Lake haven to see Hidden Figures, what a great movie and if you missed it then definitely worth catching. A huge thank you to Liz North and members of Wyong Rotary who attended with 23 people on the night without that the night would have been a flop. I think we raised about three hundred dollars or so for Polio Plus campaign. To Jenny thanks for supplying the luck door prizes.

The Race day is approaching very quickly and tickets to attend the day will again be $90 for members and $110.00 for guests, this includes entry, lunch and beer, wine and soft drink in the function room of the members stand. We may need one or two more sponsors so if you know any business that maybe interested then please let me know.

Cannot thank Maurie enough for his efforts in getting this newsletter out whilst he is recovering.

Lyn I hope you feeling better and looking forward to seeing you soon.

Kind Regards

Mitch

Yours in Rotary

Whats Up

---

You may recall last year we had a brilliant presentation from John Martin with plans to establish The Lakes College in Blue Haven.

HERE IS AN UPDATE FROM JOHN MARTIN:

Hi Mitchell,

I just wanted to update Rotary about our new school, The Lakes College.

Its been a great start to the year here in Blue Haven with our new school. We currently have 12 students enrolled with average attendance of 98% (Yr9) and 78%(Yr10). They are a great bunch of students and hopefully you will get the chance to meet some over the course of the year. We have a waiting list of approx. 40 other students from the area. Regretfully, we know we wont be able to assist that many due to our small size but it is great to see that already word of mouth has been positive and people are looking to us for guidance.

The students have been participating in a range of class activities and we have a core group who are very much settling into the routine and are meeting our standards and expectations. We have a  few who are struggling to adjust to being back at school, having been out of education for almost 2years. These young people are still pushing through and we even have 2 who are attending our afternoon classes in an attempt to catch up on all the work they have missed in the past.

Kelly, our new teacher and Central Coast local, has been a fantastic addition to work with and the students are really engaging to her work style. They especially love her food tech classes where the students set a budget, go grocery shopping and then return to school to prepare the food and serve lunch. They are focusing on different cuisine each week – for a man trying to lose some weight, these sessions are testing my discipline because some of the food is amazing and you just want more!

We hope to have an official launch of the new school later in the term and I certainly invite you and the club to attend should you be available to show our appreciation but also to give you a chance to see our school and meet the students.

For now, we are focusing growing a positive culture in the local community and gaining the trust of our youth as that has been a challenge for them in the past with many betraying their trust and, it must be said, they themselves losing the trust of others through their own choices. As I say, they are a great group and hopefully they come to see that within themselves also.

I wish you all the best and look forward to meeting again soon.

Kindest John Martin
