President's Message

Congratulations to all the winners at last week's award presentations.  It was so uplifting to hear your stories and to appreciate the commitment you have to your professions and to your community. Rotary and our club is so very proud to be able to recognise your achievements.

I would once again like to thank Jan Pryor and Annette D'Adam on a job well done.  Also thanks to Maurie Schokman, photographer extraordinaire.  It was a great pleasure to welcome our special guests Lawrie McKinna and DG Gina Growden.

I was pleased to be able to join  the Rotarians that came along to help improve the playground and surrounds at Elandra.  Under the direction of Past President Peter McCloskey, Rotarians Mitch Cowan, Roshni and Rasik Sinha, Graham Steel who got out of a sick bed and brought wife Anne to do his share, Ken Smith and especially past Rotarian Gordon "Ozzie" Moore for his hard work and expertise, all got stuck in to make the day a success.

The Community Raffle must come to a close this week.  Any outstanding butts and unsold tickets can be returned at this week's meeting. If not attending this week please contact me to make arrangements for collection.

Already some organisations have taken up the offer to showcase their company or organisation at our Benefactors' night on 8th June.  If you would also like to take advantage of this you can contact me on 0410 512 867 and I will be happy to help.

This week our ADG Russell Grove is coming along to tell us about his life in Parliament.  It should be very interesting.

Until next time

Yours in Rotary

Jenny Abourizk

This Week

18th May

Our ADG Russell Grove is our guest speaker this week to tell of his life in Parliament.

Russell Grove served the New South Wales Parliament for over forty years, having commenced duty in the Legislative Assembly in February 1971 and was the longest serving Clerk of the Legislative Assembly, having taken up that position in 1990. Russell was also the Honorary Secretary of the New South Wales Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association from 1984 until his retirement from the Parliament of New South Wales on 4 November 2011. Russell has worked with various overseas Parliaments and aid authorities in preparation of programmes for the development of parliamentary processes in Africa, South East Asia, the Middle East and Pacific nations. Russell was an early promoter for the formation of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Clerks-at-the-Table (ANZACATT) and was the inaugural Secretary to the Association at its inception and is an Honorary Life Member of the Association.

Our first working bee at Elandra took place last Saturday.  Organisor Peter McCloskey thanked all the Rotarians that turned up for the first round of work preparing the garden beds and edging.  He particularly thanked Gordon "Ozzie" Moore for his time and effort in building the edging.

Peter has planned a day in the near future to fill and plant the beds.   Look out for the date and see if you can join the team to help complete this worthwhile project.

President Elect Mitch Cowan and  Foundation Chair Roshni Sinha sign District Grant Application

Special moment for President Elect Mitch Cowan and  Foundation Chair Roshni Sinha signing their first document applying for a District Grant in the

2016-17 Rotary Year. If successful in receiving a $6,000 District Grant, this will be matched by a $10,000 private donation from the Cararoo Foundation. These funds will help our sister club in the Philippines (Rotary Club Makati Dasmarinas) fund a Water Sanitation project (WASH) in the Philippines. WASH is a project that will provide four toilet stalls plus 3 shower blocks catering for both male & females, as well as a much needed water pump system away from the toilet facilities. For a community of 50 families living on Hilabaan Island, who lost everything and bore the brunt of Typhoon Haiyan back in 2013. This project very much falls under one of Rotaries Areas Of Focus  being Water and Sanitation/Health.
