President's Message

Our monthly social get together last week was an especially enjoyable one.  It was good to see a big turnout of members to enjoy the food and company at the Canton Chinese Restaurant.  Thanks again to Deb Carroll for organising a great night.

Our community raffle is fast drawing to a close  and I must say that the response has been quite overwhelming. We do however need butts and unsold tickets to start being returned.  The draw is on 8th June so we need them well before then.  This does leave a little time for that last minute push so if you need any more tickets for your last minute sales let me know.

One of the most important events of our Rotary year is just two weeks away on 11th May. Our Pride of Workmanship, Ralph Bryant Vocational Excellence Award and Neville Royal Service Above Self Awards will be presented to some of our amazing community members.  Please put this in your diary as a must attend event to show our appreciation of their achievements. I wish to express my gratitude and thanks to Jan Pryor and Annette D'Adam for the hard work they have put in organising this event.

This week's meeting is also a very exciting one.  Our Rotary Information Open Night has become an important event on our calendar.  If you have relatives and friends that would like to know more about what you do as a member of Rotary and what Rotary stands for this is the time for them to find out and possibly consider membership themselves.

The cost is the usual $20 but your guests are free. The meal for the night is a selection of finger food, including some gluten free choices. To ensure that catering is ample it would be appreciated if your attendance indications, including your guest numbers, could be in early Tuesday this week .

It is also very exciting that on this night in particular we are able to induct our newest Rotarian Helen Helyer

Until next time

Yours in Rotary

Jenny Abourizk

MAY 2016

Some years ago, in the Kano plains of Kenya, a well-meaning development agency took on the task of improving water availability to a rural community. Committees were formed, meetings were held, and the local people were consulted. The main need the community identified was improved delivery of water for irrigation and livestock. A plan to meet this need was created, and the work was soon begun, exactly as the community representatives had requested.
