President's Message

Last Friday I attended the presentation of the Russ Graham award at the Secondary Schools Creative Arts Exhibition.  I must admit that I did not know what to expect but I was amazed at the exceptional quality of the works of art on display and I did not envy the task of the adjudicators in deciding the award winners.

The Russ Graham award is presented by our club and is named in honour of Russ Graham, a past president of our club and a champion of the development of student art.  I was absolutely proud that our club has presented this award, in some form, for over 40 years.  The appreciation expressed to me from organisers and students towards our club and Rotary was both overwhelming and heart warming.  This is the kind of community activity that really puts Rotary on the map.

We are still awaiting confirmation of our speaker for this week but you can be assured of an interesting and enjoyable meeting.

On the following Wednesday, 30th of March, we are having a very special meeting at Camp Breakaway.  At this meeting we are being joined by the Rotary Club of Wyong Tuggerah and we may also have a contingent from the Rotary Club of The Entrance. David English from the Hali will also be joining us as we present a cheque to Camp Breakaway as part of the proceeds from the recent cabaret held at the Halekulani Bowling Club.  It would be good to see a large roll up of our members for this special night to show our support and to enjoy a great barbecue.

A reminder that our next stall at Lakehaven Shopping Centre is on Saturday 16th April.  If we could have at least 6 volunteers for the day it would mean that no one would need to spend more than about 2 hours.

Finally I would like to wish everyone an enjoyable and safe Easter break.

 Until next time

Yours in Rotary

Jenny Abourizk

On Friday 18th March President Jenny and Past President Ken Smith attended the opening the Central Vision Secondary Schools Creative Arts Exhibition to present the Russ Graham Memorial Award for student art.

This award is presented by our club in memory of Russ who was President in 1974/75.  Russ with wife Jo was instrumental in commencing the club art show at which a prize for student art was presented.  This award has been presented continuously now for over 40 years, firstly at the Central Coast Festival of Arts and now at this exhibition.

This years winner was Hannah Rowe from Narara Valley High School.  Hanna is pictured left next to her work.

This exhibition is on at the Gosford Regional Gallery until 19th April.  It is well worth a visit to see the extraordinary talents of the young artists of the Central Coast..
